Summary

NEXT was Schoology’s yearly user conference where hundreds of teachers from across the globe would gather to discuss the latest innovations in teaching and learning. It was also a channel for Schoology to unveil new products and services.

I was tasked with the conception and execution of the visual identity, theme, and design of all event materials for the first three NEXT user conferences.

Deliverables included programs, decorations, stage dressing, presentations, awards, badges, certificates, signage, swag, step ‘n repeats, interactive activity stations, websites, and  promotional communications.

About Schoology

Schoology puts collaboration at the heart of the learning experience with an easy-to-use learning management system (LMS) that connects the people, content, and systems that fuel education at over 60,000 K-12 schools and higher education institutions.

NEXT 2014  Denver

This first incarnation of the NEXT conference established the brand that would power it for years to come.

The NEXT logo was designed to feel larger than life—a modern day World’s Fair. A mash-up of a traditional font and modern three dimensional styling, a series of concentric layers conveys the transition from the past to the future as we look towards what comes “NEXT”. The varying colors imply the individual signposts against which educators measure progress.

The scope of the inaugural NEXT conference was modest but proved there was enthusiasm among the 300 attendees for an event of this nature.

NEXT 2015  Chicago

The second year of NEXT was a whole new ballgame as the scope of the conference ballooned dramatically to accommodate the 750+ attendees.

NEXT 2015 was held at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. A vintage aesthetic married the conference theme of “Transform what’s possible” with the venue’s decor, which consisted of browns, beiges, and jewel tones.

Vintage computer technology like punch cards and oscilloscopes were juxtaposed with modern hexadecimal syntax to convey the transformation of learning methodologies pioneered by the Schoology LMS.

NEXT 2016  Miami

Powered by the draw of celebrity keynote speaker Bill Nye, NEXT 2016 hosted over 1000 attendees at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach to reflect on what it means to “Elevate achievement.”

In my mind, Miami is forever tied to the 80s through the pastel colored pop culture phenomenon that was Miami Vice. It is for that reason that the 2016 show drew inspiration from not only the colorful Miami architecture but also prominent design aesthetics of the period like Memphis Milano and neon noir.
